The Threefold Challenge of Samuel Adams |

Samuel Adams Issues Three Challenges, November 20, 1772
Original Letter || Annotated
If he were alive today, Samuel Adams would want you to become
• an Extraordinary American
• an Extraordinary Christian
• an Extraordinary Human Being
These were the three goals he set before the American colonists in 1772 when he circulated his first letter through a network of communication known as "the Committees of Correspondence." A few years later he would sign the Declaration of Independence.
Most Americans already think they are exceptional, if not extraordinary. In international academic competitions, Americans score 27th in math, but Number One in "self-esteem," meaning that Americans think they are the greatest, even though they are not.
I won't be able to persuade you to enroll in Samuel Adams Coaching unless I can get you to see yourself more objectively.
If Samuel Adams were here to day, and could observe you, your government, your culture, and your reaction to the world around you, Samuel Adams would be forced to conclude that you
- are NOT a REAL American
- are NOT a GENUINE Christian
- are NOT a good steward of the gifts and potential with which you have been endowed by your Creator as a human being created in His Image.
If he were here today, Sam Adams:
• Would repeal the Constitution and abolish the government it created, because:
• "Liberty Under God" has been abolished
• The ideals of the Declaration of Independence have been outlawed.
• Tyrannical Confiscation of property/wealth - more than Boston Tea Party
• Ignorance and Dependence - massive; widespread; profound.
• Would use a Network of Communication - A modern "Committees of Correspondence" - something we hope will emerge from the Samuel Adams Coaching Program.
Here are Three Goals for YOU from Samuel Adams:
1st Goal: Be A REAL American
What is a REAL American?
-
According to the Birth Certificate of America, we have not just a right, but a duty to abolish any government that becomes destructive of our right to life, liberty and property -- in other words, a government that will not allow us to live in peace. If you believe the government has a right to kill us, enslave us, and confiscate our property, then you are a communist, not an American, even if you are a citizen by birth. And if you believe that the government has the right to kill, enslave, and steal from foreigners, then you are not a good Christian.
Most people living in the United States today are lousy Americans and are not Christians.
True Americans rejected an Empire which sent Red Coats to impose colonial rule. True Christians reject the Empire which sets up the military occupation of Iraq and sends predator drones to Afghanistan.
I deem [one of] the essential principles of our government, and consequently [one] which ought to shape its administration,… peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none.
— Thomas Jefferson, First Inaugural Address (1801)
A real American believes in "the American Dream."
What is "the American Dream?"
Most people in the U.S.A. believe the American Dream is qualifying for a fixed-rate, low-interest mortgage. Everyone who signed the Declaration of Independence would say that paying a quarter of a million dollars in interest over 30 years on a $100,000 home is a nightmare, not a dream.
George Washington described the American Dream as living safely under your own "vine and fig tree."
Where did Washington get that phrase?
The Bible.
Find out more about the "Vine & Fig Tree" vision.
A Real American understands the original "American Dream" -- the "Vine & Fig Tree" society.
Most "Americans" have never heard this phrase.
-
- A Real American believes that the Declaration of Independence is really true.
There are people living within our borders who do not. They may be hard-working, they may love their families, they may be nice neighbors, and they may never break "the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God." But they are here on a temporary work visa, sending money back home. But even though you couldn't pick them out of a crowd of Americans, they are not Americans. They were born in another country and plan to return there someday.
Imagine someone who was born here. Call him "Jones." Jones is a U.S. citizen by birth. Jones thinks immigrants like the one in the previous paragraph should all be deported or killed. He thinks the government should run all businesses, and take money from hard-working people like the one in the previous paragraph and redistribute the money to Jones. Like Hitler, Jones thinks the government should shut down all synagogues and Christian churches.
In my opinion, Jones is not a real American, even though he may be a citizen (by birth).
-
A Real American Opposes Tyranny. Franklin and Jefferson said "Rebellion Against Tyrants is Obedience to God."
-
You are not a Real American
Nobody who signed the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution would consider YOU to be a real American -- unless the mainstream calls you an "extremist." But you will be an "extremist" when you finish this program.
A Real American isn't afraid to be called an "alarmist"
Being an "alarmist" is an essential part of being a good American.
Because, it is proper to take alarm at the first experiment on our liberties. We hold this prudent jealousy to be the first duty of citizens, and one of the noblest characteristics of the late Revolution. The freemen of America did not wait till usurped power had strengthened itself by exercise, and entangled the question in precedents. They saw all the consequences in the principle, and they avoided the consequences by denying the principle. We revere this lesson too much, soon to forget it.
James Madison MEMORIAL AND REMONSTRANCE (1785) ¶3
The Papers of James Madison. Edited by William T. Hutchinson et al. Chicago and London: University of Chicago Press, 1962-77, 8:298-304
It's way too late to "take alarm." The precedents have been set in concrete. And did not take alarm. You are not a real American.
Men like Sam Adams and John Hancock were "alarmists" and "extremists." They tossed tea into the Boston Harbor and called their government a "tyranny." You, on the other hand, are a zombie. You work your boring 9-5 job like a worker-drone. You say nothing when the government takes your paycheck for a Wall Street "bailout." You say nothing when your government kills more children in Iraq than it did people in Hiroshima.
A Real American Prefers Liberty Under God, over Security under Man (or you deserve neither)
The tax on tea, the "Stamp Act" taxes, and all other taxes combined added up to only 1% or 2% of the colonists' income. The tax burden today is 20-50 times greater than it was under George III in 1776. The Pentagon consumes a trillion dollars a year. This is theft. You pay your taxes because you do not want to be locked up in prison with a psychopath. You don't want to imagine the violence you will experience if you don't pay up. But you want others to be locked up, and you want that system in place to give you the illusion of "security."
A Real American is willing to Risk something to protect "Liberty Under God" - Life, fortune, reputation. A real American takes costly action. A real American invests for "ourselves and our posterity."

A Real American is a Christian
A True American is also a Christian.
On May 2, 1778, when the Continental Army had emerged from its infamous winter at Valley Forge, Commander-in-Chief George Washington issued the following:
The commander-in-chief directs that divine service be performed every Sunday at eleven o'clock in those brigades [in] which there are chaplains; those which have none [are] to attend the places of worship nearest to them. It is expected that officers of all ranks will by their attendance set an example to their men. While we are zealously performing the duties of good citizens and soldiers, we certainly ought not to be inattentive to the higher duties of religion. To the distinguished character of patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of Christian. The signal instances of providential goodness which we have experienced, and which have now
almost crowned our labors with complete success, demand from us in a peculiar manner the warmest returns of gratitude and piety to the Supreme Author of all good.—
The Writings of George Washington, JC Fitzpatrick, ed., Wash. DC: US Gov't Printing Office, 1932, Vol. XI:342-343, General Orders of 5/2/1778
On May 12, 1779, in a speech to the Delaware Indian Chiefs, Washington coached them:
You do well to wish to learn our arts and ways of life, and above all, the religion of Jesus Christ. These will make you a greater and happier people than you are. Congress will do every thing they can to assist you in this wise intention.
The Writings of George Washington, JC Fitzpatrick, ed., Wash. DC: US Gov't Printing Office, 1932, Vol. 15, p.55.
John Witherspoon was undoubtedly one of the most influential educators of his day. His students at Princeton University included one President, one Vice President, three Supreme Court Justices, 10 Cabinet members, 12 Governors, 60 Congressmen (21 Senators; 39 Representatives) plus scores of state officials and members of the Constitutional Convention. Witherspoon said
" . . . he is the best friend to American liberty, who is most sincere and active in promoting true and undefiled religion, and who sets himself with the greatest firmness to bear down profanity and immorality of every kind. Whoever is an avowed enemy of God, I scruple not [would not hesitate] to call him an enemy to his country." [source]
Most Americans today are enemies of America. That is, enemies of the ideal that America's Founding Fathers fought for: Liberty Under God. The "Vine & Fig Tree" society.
To be a great American, America's Founders said, you have to be a Christian. Makes sense, since America was a Christian nation. (Not that a Muslim or an atheist cannot love living in America, or discover cures for diseases, and raise America's standard of living. But the more consistent they are with their own religion, the more they undermine the unique Christian foundation of America's prosperity. America is a Christian nation. Iran is an Islamic nation. The Soviet Union is an atheistic nation. Connect the dots.)
A real American is a Christian.
But You are NOT A Real Christian
Jesus Christ said it's better to be dogmatic and wrong than it is to be apathetic and air-headed. It's better to be a fanatic Nazi or a dedicated Communist than to be a "moderate."
I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. Revelation 3:15-16
Americans are air-heads. They are more concerned with being accepted by the mainstream and the majority than they are pursuing the truth. The majority of Americans think of themselves as being independent "non-conformists" in some sense, and everyone conforms to this illusion together.
You know less about American "arts and ways of life, and above all, the religion of Jesus Christ" than the Delaware Indians did. You know less about Christianity than the average 10-year old in colonial America.
Samuel Adams would say you are a victim of educational malpractice, being a product of an education system which is prohibited from teaching students that the Declaration of Independence is really true. George Washington would say you need to be re-educated, de-programmed, and connected in an online community with others who wish to become extraordinary Americans.
Samuel Adams' 2nd Goal: Be A GENUINE Christian
Back when America was still a Christian nation, Americans were civil, had good manners, treated each other with courtesy and respect.
Now that America is officially an atheistic nation, America has one of the highest crime rates on earth. Americans are rude, insulting, and violent. Americans are barbarians compared to America's Founders. And those who are not barbarians are still infected by a sophisticated form of barbarism which says we must tolerate rudeness and not be "judgmental." When a woman is being raped, we don't want to "get involved." Nor do we get involved when a woman wants to kill her baby.
Christianity has had an enormous effect on the human race. Before Christ came, a large percent of human beings died violent deaths. Most human beings were captive to barbaric empires. Today, most people die non-violent deaths.
A genuine Christian is a follower of the Prince of Peace. The more we study Christianity, the more we are challenged to be peacemakers. Most of us want to be "moderates," and we distance ourselves from "pacifists," but it is the "fanatics" who keep challenging us to get involved, and to oppose needless violence and killing.
"Christ" means "anointed king." But Jesus is not a King who conquers by military might, subjugates, exacts tribute, and suppresses individuality.
When Christ came that first Christmas, the message of the angels was: "Peace on Earth." The Old Testament prophets spoke of the day we beat our "swords into plowshares." There have been ups and downs (and we are surely in a "down"), but the trajectory of the human race since the birth of Christ has been away from war and toward "peace on earth."
Jesus said that the kings of the gentiles love to impose their will on others by force. The Greek word Jesus used to describe these people is "archist." He said His followers are not to be "archists," but are to be "servants." Some people don't like where I'm going when I say "not" an "archist." But it is Christianity that moves humanity away from imposing beliefs on others by force. Christians do not initiate force, or threaten people with violence. Christians do not send the Marines to impose
"democracy" on other nations.
A real Christian is not afraid to be called a "Pacifist." The word comes from the Latin word for "peace." A follower of the Prince of Peace does not engage in Retaliatory Violence. A real Christian loves his enemies. A real Christian does not take vengeance.
"Yes, but you don't want to take that to extremes," some will caution.
A real Christian is not afraid to be called an "Extremist." We saw above that Jesus prefers "extremists." Not the lukewarm. Not the "moderate." He wants those who are committed with their Whole Heart. Not double-minded.
The same could be said for "real Americans." "Extremists."
A Real Christian is a "Theonomist," not an "antinomian." Most Americans don't know what those words mean, but civilization hangs on them.
Too many Christians say "we're not under law, we're under grace." Obviously, Christians are no longer required to bring animals sacrifices to the temple in Jerusalem. But does that mean Christians can have sex with those animals instead? Nothing in the New Testament forbids bestiality.
It's not a question of whether you will be "under law,"
the question is, "Whose Law?"
A Real Christian is not afraid to be called a "Theocrat." A real Christian believes in "Liberty Under God," and "Theocracy" means "God rules." Christians believe in the Kingdom of God. The Government of God.
A Real Christian is not afraid to be called a "Utopian." He is not afraid to pursue "perfection" on either an individual or a social level.
A Real Christian knows he is Forgiven by Imputation, not by performing ecclesiastical works, rituals, or liturgies.
A Real Christian studies God's Word daily. Not a day goes by.

3rd Goal: Be TRULY Human
- Why were we created? What are we here for? This question was answered in a public school text found in every schoolroom in America in 1776. That text posed this question:
- What is the Chief End of Man?
- Or as we might say today, "What is the chief goal or purpose of Man?"
- It is likely that every single person who signed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution could have recited the answer to that question:
- "Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him for ever."
- The Declaration of Independence says that every human being is endowed by his Creator with unalienable rights. What do you say when Someone gives you a gift? To be truly human is to recognize your Creator in an appropriate way.
You are not truly human if you believe you are God.
- Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:31
- Gratitude is the key to Enjoying God forever. What brings us enjoyment is God's blessings. What brings God's blessings is the obedient discharge of our calling.
Human beings were created to "Exercise Dominion over the earth." Not worship the earth.
- Christ commands us to Be a "good and faithful servant"; to "do business" while He reigns in Heaven.
- not wasting talents with which you were "endowed by your Creator"
Each of us are members of a body, and our individual skills work together in a "division of labor" orchestrated by an "Invisible Hand."
-
- We are to live lives which are Pleasing to God, so that the Lord will say to us, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant."
